CELEBRATE DRINKING WATER WEEK

IN YOUR TOWN OR SCHOOL!

MAY 4 - 10, 2008

Drinking Water Week is celebrated throughout the United States during the first full week of May each year. This observance provides a great opportunity for water suppliers to let their customers know about the efforts they make year-round to provide high-quality drinking water to their communities.  It's also an excellent  time for teachers to focus some of their classroom activities on where students get their drinking water (reservoirs and groundwater wells), how it reaches their homes (distribution systems), how public water systems ensure the quality of their water (source protection, treatment, and testing), and how we can all help to make sure we have enough water for everyone (water conservation).

In Massachusetts many public water suppliers hold open houses and poster contests during Drinking Water Week.  Check with your local water utility to find out about any special activities being held in your town that week.  An annual Massachusetts Drinking Water Awards Ceremony is also held each year during Drinking Water Week. Public water suppliers, teachers, businesses, and environmental groups are honored for their efforts related to drinking water supply, protection, and education in the previous year.

The Massachusetts Drinking Water Education Partnership (MADWEP) also sponsors dozens of performances of water-themed plays in elementary schools each Drinking Water Week. If you are interested in having the National Theatre for Children come to your school in 2008, please contact Dan Laprade at (413) 755-2289.

The following materials are designed specifically for use during Drinking Water Week. Of course, they can be used anytime of year in your classroom or community.
